
Maya Tillman is an African American female artist originally from Atlanta,Georgia. Her roots stem from the south but have migrated to New Jersey where she studied Visual arts, more specifically media and performance art from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey within the art program of Mason Gross the School of Art. Throughout her years attending Rutgers her art practice has developed and changed from her humble beginnings as a graphic artist to what is now described as mixed media and performance. Her area of study was nurtured within the topic of Eco-Feminism, Black female development and preservation. Within her works she uses body movement and representation to express the emotions, trials and experiences of being an African American woman in this day and age. Her recent exhibitions include; “Woman, Herstory”,2020 a series of paintings that represent the religious story of Eve and Adam and the Black woman as a Mother figure, “Church”,2016 an oil painting and exhibition piece about the visual romance between liturgical dancers and the traditional church, and “Eve’s Garden”,2021 an exhibition about her personal journey through growth as a black woman in a post pandemic world that describes and curates a meditative healing practice with immersive experiences weaved throughout.
